Concerns Arise: Ford Mustangs with Manual Transmissions Suspected of Fire Hazard

Ford is issuing an official recall for the Mustang following the discovery that a clutch line in manual models could loosen and potentially ignite upon contact with hot exhaust components. This concerning revelation, initially reported by CarScoops, gained traction after a Mustang Dark Horse owner experienced his vehicle catching fire on the side of a highway. The incident occurred when the clutch pedal failed to return to its upright position after being depressed, resulting in a devastating outcome.

Although neither Ford nor the NHTSA has issued an official recall statement, Road & Track's investigation uncovered a Safety Recall Report detailing the potential issue with 8,161 Mustangs. While the report suggests that only about 1% of the affected vehicles are likely to experience the problem, it remains a pressing concern for Mustang owners. Despite the relatively low prevalence, the safety implications underscore the importance of swift action to address the issue and ensure the well-being of drivers and passengers.

What's The Issue?

The concern outlined in the recall report impacts all variants of the Mustang, meaning both standard and Convertible models with manual transmissions could potentially be affected. Intriguingly, the affected vehicles were not produced in sequential VIN order, suggesting a lack of pattern in the occurrence. This randomness raises questions about Ford's quality control procedures.

The core problem revolves around a clutch pressure line lacking proper retention, which can inadvertently come into contact with hot exhaust components. This contact may result in the line melting, leading to brake fluid leakage and, in extreme cases, a fire hazard. Significantly, the leaking pressure line doesn't manifest in noticeable brake issues, complicating early detection. Ford attributes this issue to a missing or improperly installed barrel nut during the assembly process.

Immediate Action Required by Owners

Ford has been alerted to two incidents of fires under the hood, both involving 2024 models. Consequently, the recall encompasses all 8th-generation Mustangs, and owners can expect notification via mail in the coming weeks. Given the absence of warning signs, it's imperative for owners to promptly schedule an inspection with their dealer. The remedy will be administered free of charge.

A Continuing Challenge for Ford

This latest hiccup adds to a string of production challenges for Ford. While efforts to tighten production standards have been underway, the company continues to encounter setbacks. Yet, Ford remains committed to rectifying these issues, with substantial plans in motion to enhance quality control measures. With perseverance and dedication, Ford aims to shift the narrative surrounding its product quality in the years ahead.
